The First Grade Closet.

I find myself often caught in the dilemma of wanting to make a fun school~ish looking place in our home, but wanting to maintain some sort of non romper room feel for non school hours. So, I decided to use our under the stairs closet to create first grade classroom haven. It was to be a special spot for my soon to be 1st grader. I was able to surprise her with it and she loves it.

First ~ A proper welcome to first grade…

Next, we have a birthday board and a “I lost a tooth board”. We have some tooth drama around here in these parts. So, a little poster to help make it fun is not a bad thing.

Last year we bought a wall pocket calendar from Lakeshore. Emma LOVES LOVES filling this all in and its good practice for her.

Two years ago I made this magnet board with metal sheeting and wood trim. We have moved this in to the closet as well.

I placed a science board filled with Astronomy as we will be studying that this year with Apologia. She has already learned things from the posters. She’s very proud of herself.

Next to science, we have our God’s Animals board. We are really excited about the Expedition Earth curriculum this year and will be using this animal board during this study. {stay tuned for lots about this curriculum this year. SO many fun projects are coming up.}

In tribute to our trip around the world, with Expedition Earth, we have our cute little kiddos hanging above our flag and Bible for pledges. I also grabbed some scrap fabric to sew a slip cover on the ugly closet rod.

A Very Hungry Caterpillar board takes up the back half of the closet. We are doing a unit study on this book right when school starts.

Finally, I threw in some pillows and a light to make a comfy reading spot.

We are fortunate to have a pretty good size space in this closet. It has been many things over the years, from storage to a girl’s clubhouse. I know this is going to work great for us this year.

We can have circle time to start the day in the closet. {There is a sentence I thought I’d never say.} It will also provide an extra semi-quiet space for reading game playing, etc. and the best part….drum roll please….I CAN SHUT THE DOOR ….

p.s. most supplies were purchased through Lakeshore Learning

p.s.s. sorry about the horrifc pictures. I couldn’t get back far enough and had to use my phone to be able to get any photographs! Hard to photograph a CLOSET!

    Thanks and have a fun school year!!!
